Philosophy of Music

Who I am

I am  a born again Christian.  The Bible is my source for all practical truth and as God's Word, it is a limitless mine of spiritual treasure. Ps. 59:17, Unto Thee, O my strength will I sing.  For God is defense and the God of my mercy.

Christ-Honoring music

Your spiritual growth will either be advanced by a Christ-honoring music philosophy or stunted by a worldly music philosophy. Whether you are browsing for good Christian music in a Christian bookstore or listening to Christian radio, you will find quite a mixture of good and bad music. Romans 12:9 says, “Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.”

We are faced with this problem today because some Christians falsely assume that only the words can make a song evil or good. These “Christians” make the lofty statement that “music is amoral” By this they mean that the melody, harmony and rhythm of music cannot be characterized as Christ-honoring or sinful. They intentionally imitate individual secular styles of dress and performance (with the false theory that they must become like them to win them).

Contemporary Christian musicians masquerade as sheep, but their music and lifestyle is evil. Matthew 7:15-20 says,

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

To justify their worldly style of music, the Contemporary Christian Movement uses the lie that music is amoral and the heresy that winning the lost is a higher priority than honoring Christ. Titus 2:14 says, “[He] gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” Jesus Christ died so we could be transformed into new creatures. Contemporary Christian Music (Christian rock) violates the biblical principle of association.

I Thessalonians 5:22 says, “Abstain from all appearance of evil.”

Secular rock music is full of drugs, sex, rebellion, androgyny, and homosexuality. Contemporary Christian Music's rock style is associated with Satan worship and the occult, sensuality and every kind of worldliness. When Christians choose to entertain themselves with Contemporary Christian music, they damage their testimony for Christ because they are identifying with this evil. Both the music and the words must be Christ-honoring. Rock music with spiritual words violates God's pattern for order. We should not subject our minds and bodies to the disorderly melody, rhythm, and harmony of rock music. I Corinthians 14:33 and 40 say, “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. Let all things be done decently and in order.”

Few individuals today recognize the spiritual and physical damage Contemporary Christian Music can bring to their lives. Nor do they see the spiritual strength, defense, and mercy that Christ-honoring music can give them. Psalm 59:17 says, “Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defense, and the God of my mercy.” Let me suggest these steps to victory over rock music, "Christian" or secular.

  1. Surrender anything to the Lord that will hinder God's work in your life. Luke 14:33 says, “So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.” Luke 18:28-29 also says, “And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake, Who shall not receive manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life everlasting.”
  2. Live by the absolute standards of God's Word rather than by your feelings. Proverbs 3:5,6 says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
  3. Fill your mind with God’s Word. Psalm 119:9-13 says, “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes. With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth.” Romans 12:2 says, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
  4. Make no provision for the flesh. Romans 13:14 says, “But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.”

As you follow all four of the above steps, pray and ask God for His strength. Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen

I Peter 5:6-11

Don't just get rid of bad music; replace it with Christ-honoring music.

Matthew 12:43-45 says,

When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.
